| What is the assessment? |
|
The Oregon Heritage Commission has launched an assessment of the status of heritage and heritage organizations in the state, including the threats they face. The assessment is the first step toward developing a long range strategy for preserving Oregon’s endangered heritage resources.
“Many cultural heritage organizations and sectors are under stress “said Commission Chair George Kramer of Ashland. “In order to develop successful strategies that address their needs, we need to first discover the many challenges they face. We expect that some of the challenges are nationwide in scope, while others are unique to Oregon.”
In addition to compiling existing data found in diverse locations, the assessment will include online and written surveys. Among those surveyed will be archaeologists, archivists, museums, heritage organizations, historic cemeteries, tribes, and preservationists.
“We will look at organizational and financial stability, community engagement, collaboration, programming, and outreach efforts,” said Kramer.

| How can I participate? |
|
You can participate in the assessment by either completing a survey or making sure that your museum, archives, local government and historic cemetery complete one. We've also developed specialized surveys for building preservationists and archaeologists.
The surveys attempt to gather information about Oregon heritage generally, as well as for each of the sectors. The surveys are due Feb. 12. The results will be compiled and analyzed, then used to provide a fact-based foundation for statewide planning and advocacy.

| The surveys |
|
There are six versions of the 2010 Oregon Heritage Assessment Survey. Please select the one that most closely matches your heritage interests.
You must finish your online survey in one session; you will not be allowed to save your answers and return to your session, or to retake the survey. If there is a chance you will not finish your online survey in one session, we encourage you to first determine your answers using the downloadable PDF as a worksheet. Then, when the worksheet is complete, enter your information in the online survey.
For some surveys, such as the archives and museums surveys, we encourage you to use the downloadable PDF as a worksheet before completing the online version.
