May is National Historic Preservation Month. For Oregonians it's a time to explore the state’s significant places and historical treasures. These historic places, artifacts, photographs and documents not only help tell the stories of our past, they also stimulate heritage tourism, a demonstrated force in economic development in communities throughout the state.
Historic Oregon sites in Clatskanie, Cottage Grove, Depoe Bay (pictured), Roseburg, and Talent have recently been added to the National Register of Historic Places. The State Historic Preservation Office, which reviewed the nominations before their submission for national recognition, has information about these and other Oregon sites on the National Register.

Commission Recruiting for Cemetery Clean-Up Volunteer Corps
Oregon's historic cemeteries need lots of TLC. Controlling vegetation and caring for historic features like headstones, footstones, curbing, fencing, etc. takes special care in these important sites. The Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries is organizing a corps of people who are willing to take a bit of training and to make themselves available to volunteer. The online training is available now. Once the training is completed those who pass can be added to the list of willing volunteers. To reach trained volunteers, people organizing cemetery clean-ups may contact the Commission and we will connect you to people in your area.
The State Historic Preservation Office has published the 2011-2016 Historic Preservation Plan. Read about what's planned, and how you can join the effort.
